One of the questions authors hear most often is, “Are your characters based on real people?”
The answer is both simple and complicated.
Where Inspiration Hides
No, there isn’t a real DJ, Cory, or Blaze walking around waiting for me to write down their conversations. My characters aren’t copies of anyone I’ve met. But every story I’ve ever loved, every place I’ve visited, every conversation I’ve overheard, and every interesting personality I’ve encountered leaves a tiny fingerprint on the stories I tell.
That’s the DNA of Emerson Grove.
A protective hero might remind me why I fell in love with romance novels in the first place. A quirky small town might spark an idea for a scene. A sarcastic comment overheard in a coffee shop can suddenly become the perfect line for a character who didn’t even exist five minutes earlier.
The Process of Discovery
Then something unexpected happens. Those little pieces begin to mix together until they become someone entirely new.
Sometimes readers ask if I planned every relationship, every friendship, and every twist from the beginning. The truth is that while I always have a roadmap, writing is also a process of discovery. Characters reveal themselves one conversation at a time.
Supporting characters quietly become fan favourites. A scene I thought would last a page suddenly changes the direction of an entire book.
Growing a Community
That’s one of the reasons I enjoy writing a series instead of a standalone novel. Emerson Grove isn’t just about one couple finding their happily ever after. It’s about watching an entire community grow, change, and welcome new faces while old friends continue their own journeys in the background.
Readers often tell me they feel like they’re visiting Emerson Grove rather than simply reading about it. That’s one of the greatest compliments an author can receive.
Looking Ahead
As I work on Book Five, I’m reminded once again that every new story carries a little bit of everything that came before it—favourite books, unexpected ideas, countless cups of coffee, and a lot of imagination. Those ingredients blend together into something that belongs entirely to Emerson Grove.
Stories have DNA, too. And I can’t wait to share where this one leads next.
